First moments and hours
You were 8 lbs 13 oz and 20 inches when you were born. We requested to have you stay with us for awhile instead of going to get a bath in the nursery and I think you were with us for a few hours which was great. I remember your observant eyes, your peaceful face which then eventually scrunched up and became your crying, I’m not going to take this anymore, face.
I remember your dad trying our our new camera lens for our Canon SLR – it had just arrived right before we left for the hospital. He took your picture as you was being weighed and measured. And most importantly, when your brother Sam arrived to visit.
Here we are saying hello to each other. And here are your cousins ACR, KAR, and EVR who came to the hospital to see you and then weren’t allowed back to our room to visit (LPCH has super strict rules about visitors to the maternity ward :-/). So dad wheeled you out to the waiting room.
We stayed in the hospital for 2 days. The nursing staff was great – super helpful with breastfeeding and other key newborn “how tos." My favorite story was when you first started breastfeeding. After you were done, the nurse took you to the nursery to get weighed and when she brought you back, she said "he burped twice." And I said out loud,"Oh yeah, right. Burping.” Because I had totally forgotten about that step (since your brother is 7, many of the things he taught us have become foggy or forgotten – but thankfully they quickly come back :-).
The nurses were helpful during the night as well, coming in as we requested and showing us how to co-sleep as well as help you eat. Nurse Laura was our favorite: very knowledgeable and matter-of-fact.
